ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION

Konstruksi elliptik dengan too dan so digunakan untuk mengindari pengulangan suatu Verb Phrase (VP) pada kalimat positif. Contohnya:

David likes jasmine and I like jasmine.

• • • • • David likes jasmine and so do I.
        • David likes jasmine and I do too.

Untuk kalimat negatif gunakan kata kerja bantu (helping verb) yaitu either dan neither. Contohnya:
I don’t know the information and he doesn’t know the information.
a. I don’t know the information and he doesn’t either.
b. I don’t know the information and neither does he.
Jika kedua kalimat yang akan kita gabungkan itu satu positif dan satu lagi negatif, maka gunakan kata but. Contohnya:
a. He went to Bandung but I didn’t.
b. He didn’t go to Bandung but I did.

Konstruksi elliptik yang lain, yaitu:

Elliptic Subject
Menghilangkan kata yang dicetak miring, contohnya sebagai berikut:
a. I visited her and I gave her some flowers.
b. I may call you tomorrow or I may phone later the day.
c. He phoned and he told me the news.

Elliptic Predicate
Elliptic predicate terjadi pada anak kalimat (subclause), contohnya sebagai berikut:
a. Since Daniel can’t accompany me. You will accompany me.
b. James undestands the lesson, so surely. All should understand the lesson.
