GERUND AND TO INFINITIVE

A. GERUND

Gerund merupakan kata kerja ditambah -ing, yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda atau yang dibendakan. Beberapa fungsi gerund sebagai berikut:

• • • Sebagai subject, contoh: Smoking is bad for our health.
    • Sebagai predicate complement, contoh: My hobby is singing.
    • Sebagai object, contoh: I like dancing.
    • Sesudah preposition, contoh: I am fond of playing the guitar.
    • Sebagai noun modifier, contoh: The waiting room is full of patients.
    • Gerund with it’s subject, contoh: Dewi’s cooking is delicious.
    • Gerund with  it’s object, contoh: I enjoy her cooking.

Kata kerja lain yang bisa diikuti oleh gerund yaitu: admit, appreciate, avoid, begin, continue, deny, dislike, finish, forget, hate, keep, mind, neglect, prefer, regret, remember, start, stop, can’t help, can’t stand.

Kata kerja lain juga ada yang dapat diikuti dengan gerund dan juga to + infinitive, tetapi memiliki arti yang berbeda. Contoh:
She forgets telling his story = dia menceritakan cerita itu kepadanya tetapi dia lupa.
She forgets to tell her story = dia lupa bahwa dia harus menceritakan cerita itu.

B. TO INFINITIVE

Beberapa fungsi to infinitive sebagai berikut:

• • • Sebagai subject, contoh: to understand Mathematics in not easy.
    • Sebagai keterangan dari kata benda, contoh: I have something to do.
    • Sebagai keterangan dari kata sifat, contoh: The lesson is easy to understand.
    • Sebagai keterangan dari kata kerja, contoh: They ran to help the injured child.
    • Sebagai keterangan dari Wh-word, contoh: I know to drive a car.
