Rangkuman Materi Question

Materi questions ternyata masih bagian dari pembahasan struktur kalimat. Artinya, pertanyaan (questions) masih dipengaruhi oleh penggunaan tenses,concord, dan lain lain. Sehari-hari kita sering menggunakan kalimat tanya dalam bahasa Indonesia dengan struktur beragam, misalnya: Gimana nih? Dia pergi ke mana? Masa sih? Namun tidak semerta-merta struktur tersebut bisa kita ubah langsung (word by word) ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Contohnya seperti ini:

Struktur yang ada di pikiran kita:

Orang-orang itu kok meninggalkan ruangan kemarin kenapa ya? 

1. False structure: Those people leave the room yesterday why?
2. Good structure: Why did those people leave the room yesterday?

Nah, bagian yang menunjukan false structure bisa diartikan jika kita menerjemahkan struktur bahasa Indonesia ke dalam English secara kata-per kata (word by word) tentunya strukturnya menjadi kacau. Hmmm! Secara teori sturktur baku kalimat dalam bahasa Iinggris (English syntax), ada 3 jenis pertanyaan yang akan kita bahas:

1. Auxiliary questions
2. Wh-word question (informative question)
3. Question Tag (Sudah dibahasa di artikel sebelumnya)

Auxiliary question

Auxiliary question adalah tipe pertanyaan yang cukup mudah dipahami karena kita hanya cukup menjawab pertanyaan tipe ini dengan yes atau no. Pertanyaan tipe ini juga dikenal dengan sebutan yes/no-questions. Untuk membuat dan menjawab auxilary question dengan mudah, perhatikan trik cepat di bawah ini

Quick tips:

Cara membaca konsep:

• Jika pertanyaan berbentuk auxiliary question (yes/no-question), pola dimulai dari Auxiliary + Subject + Verb?
• Auxiliary atau kata kerja bantu terdiri dari are, am, is, was, were, can, could, will, would, may, might, must, shall, should, do, does, did, has, have, had

Catatan:

• Subject di question dan answer adalah sama. Kecuali:

   (Apakah kamu siswa terpintar di SMA ini?)

   (Bisakah ayahmu berbicara bahasa Jepang dengan baik?)

   • No, he/my father isn’t

3. Have the mice been inside the room since last night?

   (Apakah tikus-tikus tersebut ada di ruangan sejak malam tadi?)

   • Yes, they/the mice have
   • No, they/the mice have not

4. Does Zelvania get the best score in her TOEFL test?

   (Apakah Zelvania mendapatkan skor terbaik di tes TOEFL-nya?)

   • Yes, she/Zelvania does
   • No, she/Zelvania doesn’t

5. May I collaborate with some talented dancers on the stage?

   (Bolehkah saya berkolaborasi dengan sejumlah penari berbakat di atas panggung)

   • Yes, you may
   • No, you may not

W-H Questions

Pertanyaan tipe ini mengandung partikel tanya what, where, when, who,why, how, how many/much. W-H question bisa digunakan untuk menanyakan informasi penting (dari yang sedehana sampai yang terperinci). Tipe pertanyaan ini juga dikenal dengan istilah informative question. Sebelum ke contoh-contoh, alangkah baiknya kita perhatikan pola pertanyaan yang grammatikal lewat penjelasan dan trik dibawah ini:

Verbal form (bentuk kata kerja)

Pertanyaan dalam bentuk kata kerja (verb) mengharuskan kita menggunakan verb yang menyesuaikan dengan tenses-nya.

• Jika pertanyaan berbentuk W/H question, pola dimulai dari W/H + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb?

 Contoh:

1. How has that oldman joined the party without any permission?

   how  has    subj.         verb 3

2. What doesn’t Anthony submit to his boss every day?

   (Apa yang Anthony tidak serahkan kepada bosnya setiap hari?)

3. When did the artists participate in the exhibition?

   (Kapan para seniman tersebut berpartisipasi dalam pameran?)

4. How much water can the firemen use to extinguish the fire?

   (Berapa banyak air yang kru pemadam gunakan untuk memadamkan api?)

5. What can the kids read when they are being in the mini library?

   (Apa yang bisa anak-anak itu baca ketika mereka sedang berada di perpustakaan mini?)

6. Where can I get that rare English dictionary?

   (Di mana saya bisa mendapatkan kamus bahasa Inggris yang langka tersebut?)

7. How much sugar does your aunt need to make black forest cake?

   (Berapa banyak gula yang bibimu butuhkna untuk membuat kue black forest?)

8. Why aren’t those workers having breaktime?

   (Mengapa mereka tidak sedang bekerja di waktu istirahat?)

Non-verbal form (bentuk bukan kata kerja)

Dalam pertanyaan tipe non-verbal, penggunaan complement wajib digunakan. Complement terdiri dari adjective (kata sifat), noun (kata benda), dan adverb of place (keterangan tempat)

   (Mengapa kucing-kucing sphinx mu begitu rakus?)

4. Why was the priestess being in the bombed church at that noon?

   (Mengapa sang pendeta wanita itu sedang berada di gereja yang di bom pada siang itu?)

5. How could your fingers be stronger than before?

   (Bagaimana bisa jari-jarimu menjadi lebih kuat dari sebelumnya?)

6. How will the students of engineering be the potential engineers in the future?

   (Bagaimana para mahasiswa teknik sipil tersebut akan menjadi insinyur yang potensial di masa depan?)
